What caused the destruction of Puerto Rico and when did it occur?

On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria crashed onto Puerto Rico. This hurricane was a category 5 storm that stretched for 300 miles with wind speeds up to 145 miles per hour. These powerful winds directly hit Puerto Rico thus attaching its cities with the full force of its power. Because of this, thousands of homes were destroyed as well as power lines. After the hurricane settled, thousands of people were left stuck in their own homes with 65% of the island unable to access electricity.

Current News

The United States has sent 10,000 Federal Workers to Puerto Rico to help rebuild the cities and provide supplies: gasoline, food, paper towels, water, etc. With these supplies, the citizens have been able to greatly recover as the hurricane left them with little to no resources at their disposal. However, this is not enough. Hurricane Maria damaged thousands of homes, farms, and power lines. Thus, a vast majority of Puerto Rico does not have access to electricity and WiFi. Because of this, most families are unable to contact the government and are left with out help. Therefore, Puerto is still in a state of despair and needs even more help to recover.

Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria: A Survival Story

Today I have – if not the honor, then the duty – to describe, firsthand, what it is to live through the aftermath of the worst storm of this brutal hurricane season.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, it continued to travel along the island for the next 30 hours. While only around 60 deaths have been officially identified, scientists estimate that over 1,000 are likely dead as well. Due to the destruction of power lines, families are unable to contact anyone and leaving their relatives to worry in fear for their condition. Also, flying debris from the hurricane's winds as well as collapsed structures have left many with grave injuries. While there as hospitals to tend to them, they are overflowing with people.
